FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Congressional Candidate Robert Dobbs Reacts to the Attempt by the SC Legislature to Consider Arizona Like Immigration Legislation and its Subcommittee Hearing

Georgetown, SC - Congressional candidate Robert Dobbs (SC-1, Green) makes the following statement concerning SC Senate Bill 1446 and SC House Bill 4919, which are attempts to mimic Arizona’s SB1070 towards immigration.

Robert Dobbs stated, “The SC Legislature never seems to amaze me more than the ridiculous legislation they continue to bring forward. These bills are clear attempts by members of the SC Legislature to garner media attention in lieu of the reaction to SB1070 from the Arizona Legislature and to attack the Hispanic community of South Carolina. It isn’t enough the Legislature refuses to take the Confederate Flag off of the State Capital grounds, but now they must also play the blame game and attack another minority groups in South Carolina, Hispanics.”

The Senate bill would allow state and local police to check immigration status after detaining or arresting a person for another reason. The officer would need reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally. People questioned would have to provide identification issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, a tribal enrollment card or an ID issued by the U.S. government. The bill also includes a provision that would outlaw the hiring of illegal immigrants for day labor.

Dobbs also stated, “This bill is definitely a racist attempt to target the Hispanic community of South Carolina and serves no purpose other than to overburden the law enforcement community in South Carolina. The Federal government already has a Federal agency to deal with illegal immigration, a legal process to include Immigration Courts, and the Federal financial resources. Immigration is the responsibility of the Federal government and its enforcement is also the responsibility of the Federal government.

What amazes me more is the fact that also a Democrat Senator sponsored this bill and the SC Democratic Party has not come out against this measure. It is telling of the major political parties of South Carolina when they decide to utilize legislation against a group that is a major contributor, both socially and economically, in our Nation and South Carolina.”

Robert Dobbs, a veteran of the U.S. Army, is running for Congress in South Carolina’s First District.
